The Assignment
For our animation class, we had to come up with a 15 second animated diorama about a topic of our choice. Simple, right? It was actually more difficult than it seemed. Coming up with the topic was the hard part, and I spent a while trying to figure out what to do. Turns out, a scene I drew digitally a few months ago could be pulled apart and turned into a 15 second animation. This is the scene I drew a couple months back.

Storyboard
I envisioned how I wanted my animation to play out in my head, then put my ideas to paper. However, this meant I had to draw a couple extra assets. I wanted the animation to start off with the title lowering off screen with a wave, and end the same way. I thought it would be visually appealing to have a school of fish in the background swim across screen before my main fish was introduced. Then, I wanted to play out a short sequence of the fish being caught by a fishing rod.
Final Animation
My final diorama taught me a lot of new things about animation. This is by far one of my favorite pieces I’ve done this year, and I have a new fondness for animation and its process.
Reflection
As my first “real” short animation, it was definitely a challenge putting everything together. Fortunately, after getting my bearings the program came easy to me. I had a lot of fun putting this project together, and it was extra special because it was all hand-drawn by me. I would definitely like to do something like this again in the future with another piece I’ve drawn.
